Editorial interns at Dog Ear Publishing work closely with the production and editorial staff to facilitate the editing and design of our authors' works. Assisting in a wide range of project tasks, interns gain direct experience with a variety of aspects of book publishing, while also gaining a good understanding of the dynamic nature of the self publishing market.

This is a part-time position, working between 20-24 hours per week, over a period of approximately 4 months. Time frames will be addressed at the interview stage based upon the needs of the intern.

An Editorial Interns' responsibilities may include:

  • Reading, evaluating, and reporting on a variety of manuscript submissions, across all genres
  • Sending manuscript rejections, requests, and submission guidelines to potential authors
  • Reviewing page proofs and Dog Ear Publishing or author marketing materials
  • Administrative work, including file and records management
  • Reviewing and communicating schedules for manuscripts in production
  • Seeking out promising new publishing avenues for Dog Ear by reading publishing journals, blogs, etc.
  • Special projects as needed
  • Assisting all members of the production and editorial staff as needed

Necessary skills and qualifications:

  • Highly self-motivated, highly detail-oriented - we are a VERY entrepreneurial shop
  • A passion for the ever-changing publishing industry
  • Some understanding of the self-publishing market, and Dog Ear Publishing's position in the market
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Computer literacy, particularly in MS Office products
  • Current undergraduate experience in English or a related field
