Dog Ear FAQ
What does "Dog Ear" mean?
Something that is worn from frequent use - and something that often indicates a reader's FAVORITE portion of a book is called "dog eared". We want to be that "favorite" spot for authors on the internet.
How much experience does Dog Ear have?
Dog Ear Publishing was created by 3 guys who all have a long history in the "traditional" publishing and printing businesses. We come specifically from the Acquisitions (the Editors who sign books at traditional publishing houses), Production (the folks who build the books for traditional publishers), Marketing (um - self explanatory, right?), and Printing industries. Our company has built (and still builds) books for some of the largest book publishers in the world - across all sorts of topics: Trade Fiction books, Textbooks, Computer Manuals, Biographies, Childrens' books - even books on Self-Publishing! We've also built books for some of the SMALLEST publishers. But they all come to us for one reason—we care about our customers.
Where is Dog Ear located?
We are located in the heart of the Midwest - in Indiana at 4011 Vincennes Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46268. Our toll free number is at the top of the page.
May I come to visit Dog Ear?
Of course. We welcome visits from potential authors and anyone interested in our company. Please call to arrange a personal tour.
Is Dog Ear Publishing a publisher?
Absolutely! However, our primary interest is in enabling YOU to be a publisher of your own book. We offer ALL of the services provided by a traditional publishing house. You choose what services you want. See our Services page for details. We don't discriminate about what to publish based upon our "opinions"—every author has the right to see their ideas in print!
Is Dog Ear a "vanity publisher"?
Absolutely not! Vanity publishers charge thousands of dollars to print box loads of books - and their services most often stop there. Dog Ear Publishing wants to help you realize the dream of publishing your book - and will support you from writing to marketing your printed book. We don't even require you to purchase any printed books. Vanity publishers provide a one-time service.
What Dog Ear Publishing does that a vanity publisher does not:
- supports your efforts throughout the writing process
- provides nearly unlimited publishing options
- processes and fulfills book orders
- partners with you on marketing and promotional programs
- offers "single copy" availability for your books—print ONLY as many as you need
- delivers personal, enthusiastic, and professional support
What is on-demand publishing?
"On-demand" means exactly what it implies: your books are created as you need them. We can create books in as small a quantity as one, and as quickly as 48 hours. Technology enables us to hold your book in electronic form, without the need for a warehouse and lots of inventory. This removes the two greatest costs in publishing, allowing you to concentrate more fully on creating EXACTLY the book you want.
What is Self-publishing?
Self-publishing is all about the author. The author pays for the publication of his or her book, and they take all the risks involved. All the benefits of success and risks of failure are carried by the author. The author has control in making design decisions and marketing plans. If an author pays any money for the publication of his or her book, he or she is self publishing.
What is Traditional publishing?
"Traditional publishing" is all about the publisher. A publisher (like Harper-Collins or McGraw Hill) pays the author for the rights to a book. The publisher then covers all the costs of publication for the book, and it takes all the risks involved. All the benefits of success and risks of failure are carried by the publisher. The publisher has control in making design decisions and marketing plans. If an author is paid a sum for the publication of his or her book, he or she is probably working with a 'traditional' publisher.
What are 'self-publishing companies'?
Self-publishing companies are called 'book packagers' in the traditional world of publishing. These self-publishing companies provide service to authors (or, as 'book packagers' provide services to publishers) that center around the production and publishing of books. Most self-publishing companies provide a full suite of service for authors, from editing, to design and production, to distribution and marketing.
What kind of book marketing does Dog Ear Publishing offer?
Dog Ear provides many types of book marketing services to help authors promote their books. Resources on various book marketing strategies are also found in our Article section. Our Marketing and Promotion articles covers many topics, from how to write a book marketing plan, to using Press Releases in book marketing, to Setting Up Author Signings, and more.
Does Dog Ear automatically distribute review copies of my book to media outlets?
Most Dog Ear Publishing books are printed on demand, thanks to this efficient system, we are not required to hold an inventory of books. We will forward a copy of your book to a valid media outlet that requests one.
When is the best time to start by book marketing efforts?
Ideally your book marketing efforts started right along with your writing. But, we know that is rarely the case, and that's OK. For your book to reach its full potential, you need to develop a robust book marketing plan.
What is a Media Kit?
The Media Kit is "tool box" of book marketing. This 'kit' holds all the pertinent information about your book. The standard elements of a media kit are a press release, introduction letter, author biography, a review copy of your book and copies of any positive reviews or endorsements your book has received.
