2008-
BOOK EXPLORES ECOLOGICAL WONDERS OF THE AUSTRALIAN
OUTBACK
Meanderings
in the Bush: Natural History Explorations in Outback
Australia is released by author Richard
E. Macmillen
Meanderings
in the Bush relates the experiences encountered
by the authors, while conducting ecological field
research over a span of several decades, in the
Channel Country of central Australia.
This desert region of the Australian Outback has
a very unpredictable climate in which the prevailing
condition of drought may be abruptly terminated
by monsoonal rains and flooding, presenting unusual
challenges for its inhabitants. In 1966 MacMillen,
an American animal physiological ecologist, set
out to explore the survival strategies of some of
the animals that thrive there. This initial experience
developed into a deep love for the country and many
subsequent research adventures, accompanied by his
wife, Barbara.
Dick MacMillen, Professor Emeritus of Ecology and
Evolutionary Biology, University of California,
Irvine, and Barb MacMillen, a Geographer, have written
and illustrated a comprehensive work, blending science
and history with personal anecdotes. As you might
imagine, it is not easy to traverse such terrain.
While reading about their fascinating ecological
finds, you will also learn about the trials and
mishaps that occurred along the way, and about the
excitement of field biology. Meanderings
in the Bush is as entertaining as it is
informative.

web site is www.MeanderingsInTheBush.com.
