Author Sha Rhonda Dukes takes an unabashed look at
big city life in her novel, A Lesson Unlearned. The story is of three naïve
sisters, Ronnie,
ReNae and Monica who have led sheltered lives
in rural New Jersey
and are forced to quickly learn some city street
smarts when their family relocates to urban Atlanta.
Holding
little knowledge of city know-how, the sisters discover
that the their new world in Atlanta can sometimes
be tough and callous, not the world to which they’ve
been accustomed in rural life. Dukes narrates the
account of a family dealing with the issues of real
life—love, risks and making sound decisions. When
Ronnie, ReNae and Monica all fall in love with strong
men who lead dangerous lives, the girls make detours
from plans they had originally made. It’s not until
danger shows up on their doorstep that they deal
with the perilous decisions they’ve made.
Ultimately,
Dukes’ characters make realizations that love and
tough love must sometimes go hand in hand. Will
it be in time to save their relationships, or will
they stay on their destructive patterns?
